Australia Post Mail Redirection

How to Use and Benefit from Australia Post Mail Redirection?

368,700 Australians moved interstate during 2019-20! Also, 104,100 people had already shifted to live in a different state by the first quarter of 2021. Thus, the Australia Post mail redirection option is quite popular in the country!

australia post bulk mail postage costs and rates

We understand that moving to a different place is hectic, and the last thing you want to worry about is receiving mail. Yet, it is crucial to get your new address updated at the earliest to forward your mail—to prevent lost items or thefts.

Using Australia Post mail forwarding or redirect helps you drop a request conveniently and re-route your incoming mail for up to one year.

This blog helps you understand how to forward mail Australia with its features and costs.

Let us begin!

What Is Mail Redirection?

It is a postal subscription service that allows you to forward mail items addressed to your residence or office to your new address. You can redirect the mail anywhere, whether the address is within Australia or overseas.

There are four subscription plans for you, depending on the service length you need: one month, three months, six months, and a year. You can also extend your service if you want to stay at a different address and forward your mail there for longer.

For example, you can use mail redirect if you want to become a digital nomad and stay on Kangaroo Island for a few months. Or if your business shifts to a new location for a few weeks because of renovation work.

How to Redirect Mail?

The purpose of redirecting your mail pieces to a different address is to allow you to move seamlessly. You do not need to hitchhike back and forth to collect your envelopes or packages from your old mailbox. Nor do you need to miss out on crucial correspondence like invoices and cheques.

  • You can redirect mail items eligible for the service for any period.
  • Fill out an application form and add up to six names. These people can be your family members, roommates, etc. You can also add your legal name from before marriage or a selected English one. The motive is to redirect every mail item addressed to your old house, irrespective of the recipient’s name—making the process more efficient.
  • You may cancel, extend, or modify your mail forwarding service whenever needed.
  • Australia Post lets you opt-in for notifying energy providers, insurers, telecom companies, banks, etc., about your address change.
  • You may be eligible for a 12-month free postal redirection service if you are affected by domestic violence, a natural disaster, or a caretaker of a deceased estate.

Types of Australia Post Redirect Mail

There are four types of services suitable for different circumstances, and they are

Personal

It is one of the most popular mail redirection services for forwarding personal mail items, like bills, letters, parcels, etc. However, you must select this option only when you or other listed applicants don’t run a business from home. Also, do not select this service if you have a concession card (because there are other plans for these situations).

You only need to produce a government-authorised proof of identity while applying for this plan.

Here are the rates:

Redirecting mail to: One month Three months Six months One year
Australia $34 $68 $102 $170
Overseas $68 $136 $204 $340

Concession

This forward mail service is apt when you have a valid concession card or someone else in your application does. It helps you get discounted rates on all plans. You only need to provide proof of identity and the concession card with the application.

You can apply for redirecting mail at the Post Office or online on the postal service’s website if you have a:

  • Healthcare Card of any type.
  • Commonwealth Seniors Health Card.
  • Pensioner Concession Card.

Apply at a nearby Post Office if you have a:

  • MyPost Concession Card.
  • Veterans Repatriation Health Card.
  • Norfolk Island Social Services Card.
  • Department of Veterans Affairs Card.

The rates begin at only $20.40, almost $14 less than the Personal mail forwarding service.

Australia $20.40 $40.80 $61.20 $102
Overseas $40.80 $81.60 $122.40 $204

Home Office

The Home Office Postal Redirection service helps you bundle your mail with items for your trust, Self-Managed Super Fund (SMSF), or home business.

For example, suppose you want to start an online t-shirt selling business from home. You can use this service to receive mail pieces addressed to your office (which is also your residence) address.

You cannot apply for this Australia Post forwarding mail service online and must visit the Post Office. Remember to carry a proof of identity showing your address with any of the following documents:

  • A tax or business certificate statement for a home office.
  • A trust statement with your mailing address for an individual or company trust.
  • An SMSF report with your residential delivery address for SMSFs.

Below, we have listed the mail redirection cost for the Home Office service:

Redirecting mail to: One month Three months Six months One year
Australia $68 $170 $340 $680
Overseas $136 $340 $680 $1,360

Editor’s Note: If you want to skip handling your business printing and logistics in-house, sign up to use PostGrid’s direct mail services. They allow you to launch a mail marketing campaign or ship crucial documents online in no time!

Business

The Business redirection of the mail plan works differently from the others because it has several sub-services (and is expensive). This service is an excellent option for businesses moving to a new location temporarily. It enables them to receive mail items, like returned stocks, cheques, customer inquiries, supplier statements, etc.

So, how to use redirection mail for business addresses:

  • You can apply for one, three, six, or twelve months like the other services.
  • Businesses can add up to six names, including their employees, partners, trading names, etc.
  • Pay for the plan you select using Visa or Mastercard.
  • Extend, change, or cancel your service as needed.
  • The Post Office sends you an email on receiving your mail redirect application, and the processing time is usually three business days. Also, you get a confirmation email with the tax invoice once Australia Post accepts your application.
  • Your service starts on the date of your application acceptance up to the time specified.

Here is the cost of mail redirection for commercial addresses:

Redirecting mail to: One month Three months Six months One year
Australia $136 $340 $680 $1,360
Overseas $272 $680 $1,360 $2,720

Now, let us discuss the types of Business forwarding services:

  • Company: Select this plan online or at the Post Office if you have a Certificate of Registration or ABN. You must produce relevant business documents and proper identification for availing of this Auspost redirect mail option.
  • Association or club: If you run a club, community group, charity, not-for-profit (NFP) firm, or association, apply for this mail redirection service at the Post Office. Carry your ID proof, supporting documents, and a completed application form.
  • Sole traders and partnerships: Home business owners who may or may not share a hub or office space and partnership firms can apply at the Post Office with an ID proof and application form. Sole traders may provide the Certificate of Registration if they have one.
  • Government body: Apply at the Post Office with ID proof, application form, and relevant documents to redirect mail for government agencies, schools, or similar institutions. If you have a Certificate of Registration, apply online under the Company option.

How Can You Prove Your Identity to Apply for Mail Redirection Australia Post?

You need to provide identity proof to the postal services, and the type of ID you have can affect your application.

Below are the documents you need to apply on the website or at the Post Office:

  • Foreign passport with an Australian visa.
  • Australian citizenship certificate.
  • Australian driver’s licence.
  • Australian birth certificate.
  • Australian passport.
  • Digital iDTM.
  • ImmiCard.

You can apply for mail redirection at the Post Office and carry each of the following:

  • Any document with your name and mailing address, like a utility bill.
  • And any document with your signature, like a Statutory Declaration or Keypass.

Please Note: You can also redirect mail pieces already in transit by signing up on MyPost.

There are many other postal services if you want to receive items elsewhere. For example, you can purchase the Hold Mail service if you don’t have a forwarding address and need the Post Office to store the items for you. Then, you can collect the mail whenever you return.

Another alternative to the redirect Australia Post service is using PO boxes. They help you receive items in different locations, and you can pick them up whenever you want.

Virtual mailboxes function similarly, except that you get more features, like mail preview, shredding, and forwarding.

Frequently Asked Questions (FAQs)

Can I redirect mail from an international address?

No, you cannot apply for mail redirection from an international address. The mail item must originate from within Australia, and you can re-route it anywhere, not vice versa.

However, you cannot redirect some mail types to international addresses, including Express Post, Parcel Post, Registered Post, and others requiring customs documentation.

Why did I get a tracking update saying the item will be delivered to the old address even after I applied for forwarding it to a new address?

If you applied for forwarding and still get tracking updates with your old address, there is a problem with the mail redirect request. Perhaps, the Post Office could not attach the new address label before loading on the delivery van, which is a manual mistake. Or there could be a technical glitch leading to a non-consideration of your mail forwarding Australia request.

However, if your tracking update says ‘delivered,’ but you did not receive the parcel, check if:

  • The carrier left the item in a safe place, like behind something or inside the mailbox.
  • Somebody else accepted your package on your behalf.
  • The sender wrote the correct delivery address on the item.

Does Australia Post send an address change notification to all organisations after receiving your request?

No, the Post Office only notifies selected providers like banks and government departments. Also, you need to opt-in for this feature while applying for Personal or Concession mail redirection services.

Sometimes, the providers may require additional details and contact you directly. If your provider is not on the list, you need to inform them about your Auspost mail redirection request yourselves.

Can I change my Australia Post forward mail address?

You can change your forwarding address by filling out the Cancel or Alter form. Often, you may need to visit the Post Office and pay the applicable cancellation fee. Then, you can apply again.

However, correcting a mistake in your address is simpler. The Post Office sends you a confirmation letter on receiving your Australia Post mail redirect request enabling you to check and report the errors.

Australia Registered Post International

How Does Australia Registered Post International Help You Mail Your Documents Effectively?

Imagine you want to send documents, like business contracts, renewals, invoices, cheques, registration forms, etc., regularly to your associates or customers. It doesn’t matter what you mail and to whom—as long as you use Registered Post International to ship your items securely!

australia post registered post international

International shipping can be expensive, making it essential to use a mailing service that guarantees your documents reach the intended recipients. Luckily, International Registered Post can do the job by providing you with the signature on delivery!

This blog talks more about this postal shipping service—to make your mailing activities more secure and reliable.

Let us begin!

What is Registered Post International?

Australia Post’s Registered Post service is ideal for sending crucial documents to international destinations. It ensures that your mail reaches your intended recipient without confusion or other problems. But, the delivery times vary for every country, so contact your nearest Post Office or use the online delivery estimate tool to determine the same!

At PostGrid, we often get the question- is International Registered Mail available to send packages? Sadly, the answer is no, but PostGrid’s direct mail API can help you prepare and ship all your mail pieces using ideal postal services at the best rates!

Australia Post has many international mailing options that we will discuss later. However, Registered Post International helps you send small and large envelopes with your files, documents, or letters that need an extra protection layer. But, it is advisable to ship items that aren’t time-critical because the Post Office takes a while to process Registered Post mail.

You can send mail pieces weighing only up to 500 g because this service is only for paper documents. If your items weigh more, you may need to use Express Courier or other options.

Signature on delivery and a $100 insurance coverage are the two primary features of the Australia Post Registered Post International option. Tracking is unavailable with this service, but you get a delivery confirmation via the recipient’s signature!

If your documents are worth more than $100, you can buy extra cover for up to $5,000. However, Australian Consumer Law states that you get a postage refund with the compensation of $100 if you didn’t buy extra coverage for Registered Post International items.

The best part about this service is that its rates start at only $17.70. Also, you don’t need to affix labels or stamps to send an Australia Post International letter or legal document. You can buy a bunch of Registered Post envelopes for international shipping and use them whenever required.

Small envelopes are of DL size (130 mm x 240 mm). And you can buy them at a discounted rate of $16.83 each on buying ten envelopes and $15.94 each for 50+ envelopes.

Large prepaid envelopes for sending Registered Post International letters cost $27.50 per piece. They are of B4 size (250 mm x 353 mm) unless you buy ten at $26.13 each and 50+ envelopes at only $24.75 per piece.

How to Send Australia Post Registered Post International Items?

First, you must prepare your letters according to Australia Post’s prescribed dimensions. Small envelopes should not exceed the DL size while maintaining a maximum thickness of 5 mm. Similarly, large envelopes should be of B4 size with their thickness not exceeding 20 mm.

You can stuff your letters into an Australia Post International letter envelope for quick mailing. Typically, you may drop off your items in a red street posting box around you or take them to the Post Office. However, you must lodge your envelopes over the counter to get proof of posting. The postal employees at the office accept your items and postmark your lodgement receipt as proof of mailing.

There is no way to get this receipt when you drop Registered Post International letters in a street posting box. Hence, take your significant items to the Post Office to secure your mailing and store evidence.

Other International Mailing Options By Australia Post

Australia Post has four other global mailing services other than International Registered Post, and they are:

Economy

If you don’t need tracking services and your items aren’t time-sensitive, choose Economy to ship internationally at low rates. It is suitable for mailing letters and packages of up to $100, but you can buy an extra cover. You can pay an additional fee and avail the optional signature on delivery feature.

There are two options within the Economy service:

  • Economy Air Letter – Like Registered Post International items, it is apt for non-urgent documents and letters weighing up to 500 g. Prices start at $2.50 only for every envelope.
  • Economy Air Parcel – For non-urgent parcels of low value, weighing no more than 2 kg. You must fill out CN22 or CN23 customs forms to send packages using this service. Prices start at only $8.90 for shipping parcels internationally using this option.

Standard

The Standard service is another effective Australia Post mailing option, like the International Registered Post letter. It offers tracking and multiple optional extras to help you customise postal shipping.

Standard is best for sending packages up to 20 kg that are not urgent. You can purchase a signature on delivery and an extra cover if needed. The rates start at $15.20 only! But, you must lodge your items at the Post Office, unlike International Registered Mail letters that you can drop in a street posting box.

You may buy the Standard satchels on the website. Or use your packaging materials and print your labels online.

Express

Australia Post’s Express mailing service is perfect for speedy and trackable mailing. Additionally, you don’t need to pay extra for a signature on delivery like the above two options. It is an included feature with email and SMS notifications throughout your item’s journey.

It is similar to Registered Post International because you can mail letters or documents only weighing up to 500 g. However, it is faster, and its prices start at $28.50 for letters and $30.20 for parcels.

Courier

The Courier mailing service is the most premium international mailing option in Australia. It is faster than Express and offers tracking and signature on delivery.

You must fill out the Courier airway bill and International Courier declaration for using this service, making it more complicated to send than Registered Post International items. The prices start at $90.20, but they justify the fast mailing speed!

How to Address An Envelope AU

How to Address An Envelope Australia to Guarantee Accurate Shipping?

There are 12.4 million delivery points across our country! And Australia Post delivers millions of items every day.

Hence, we know that postal mail is a big part of Australia’s communication network. And yet, we cannot assume that everyone knows how to address an envelope correctly. The Post Office returns several items to the senders because of incorrect or invalid addressing.

postage paid envelopes

You must use a specific Australia Post-prescribed format for addressing an envelope or package! Try sticking to the Post Office’s guidelines and avoid using other methods.

We understand that the process can be daunting and complicated, primarily if you have started sending direct mail recently. Thus, we have compiled this article to help you learn the basics of addressing envelopes and mail items confidently!

Let us begin!

How to Address an Envelope Australia?

Before we get into how to write an address on an envelope, please consider your envelope’s dimensions. Leave at least 15 mm at the bottom as the clear zone.

Also, leave 15 mm between the address zone and the right and left edges. This section should look like a horizontal rectangle towards the centre!

Typically, there are three lines in your mailing addresses:

Recipient’s Name

The first line should contain your recipient’s full name. You may also mention more than one name on this line, for example, ‘Jane and Armie Holt. This method is apt for addressing an envelope for couples or family members. If the recipients do not share a common surname, you can only add up to two distant names on one envelope.

Alternatively, you can add the organisation’s name if you do not know the name of the concerned person and want to send something to a company.

If you know the recipient’s name, write it on the first line and mention the company name on the second line.

Street Address

While addressing an envelope, the second last line must have the street address. Write the correct street number and name with the directionals (if any).

If your recipients reside in an apartment complex, the apartment number should appear before the street number. You can use a slash in between to separate them and mention the street name further, for example- 15/22 Western Road.

Suburb, State, and Postcode

The most crucial step in learning how to write an address on envelope is to know how to write the last line. This line should carry three elements: the suburb, state, and postcode

First, mention the name of the destination Post Office or the suburb. Also, include the correct state or territory abbreviation after leaving one space.

Here are the state abbreviations you must keep handy while addressing an envelope in Australia-

  • QLD: Queensland
  • ACT: Australian Capital Territory
  • VIC: Victoria
  • NSW: New South Wales
  • WA: Western Australia
  • NT: Northern Territory
  • TAS: Tasmania
  • SA: South Australia.

Then, insert the correct postcode at the end. If you aren’t sure about the postcode, you can find it on the Australia Post’s website

Please note that the last line of your mailing addresses must always be in capital letters!

You don’t need to write the country’s name when addressing an envelope for sending domestic mail.

Below are some examples of how to address envelope using the address format we discussed above:

Noah Strange
820 Chestnut Court
DAWES POINT NSW 2000

Oliver Hammer and Jack King
UIF Group
58/ 10 Seaview Street
CLEVELAND QLD 4163

So, this is how to write an address on envelope Australia to ensure the Post Office delivers your items smoothly! You can use address labels for sending packages, but the address format remains the same.

We know how hectic it can be to check hundreds and thousands of addresses in your database. You may have to reformat them and verify whether they are correct every time you need to mail something!

So, how about using an online tool to do that work for you?

Moreover, you don’t need to memorise how to address an envelope Australia and do anything manually.

Address verification services like PostGrid help you validate millions of addresses simultaneously. Our scalable solutions allow you to add missing details, validate addresses, and make your mailing lists mail-ready!

Using Stamps to Mail Your Items

Once you finish addressing your envelope, attach the correct number of stamps in the top-right corner. However, ensure that your letters fit the Australia Post’s prescribed dimensions. The maximum weight of your regular envelopes must be 240 mm x 130 mm with a thickness of no more than 5 mm. Large envelopes must not exceed 360 mm x 260 mm x 20 mm.

Domestic stamp prices start at only 60c, whereas overseas stamps cost $2.50, depending on your mailing options. You can drop your items in the street mailboxes after addressing your envelope and affixing the stamps properly!

It is better to take your mail pieces to the Post Office if you are unsure of the postage rates.

direct mail operations

Drafting a Return Address

Luckily, you may write your return address effortlessly once you know how to address an envelope because you must follow the same steps!

Some mailers skip writing the return address, but this practice can lead to several problems. The Post office depends on this address to return your mail items if they cannot deliver them. Otherwise, it has no other option than to discard your packages or envelopes, causing tons of waste.

Thus, it is better to mention your return address using the same format as addressing an envelope or package. Place it on the flap towards the back side of the envelope. Or you can write it in the top-left corner of the front side with the mailing address.

Here is an example of how to address envelope (return address):

Lucas Taylor
48 Main Street
COOLAMON NSW 2071

If you want to mention your commercial address, you may use these examples:

Henry William
Global Solutions – Marketing Department
2 Amy Street
PERTH WA 6000

Marketing and Advertising
JNL Inc.
63/ 2 Barrenjoey Road
SYDNEY NSW 2108

Addressing an Envelope for Defence Personnel

Australia Post’s Defence Mail service allows you to send envelopes and packages to Defence personnel within the country and overseas. But, you should know how to write an address on an envelope going to the Armed Forces Post Office (AFPO).

Domestic postal charges apply for the following:

  • AFPO2 (Malaysia).
  • Mail going to HMA ships.
  • Envelopes or parcels over 2 kg (cubed) going to the other AFPOs.

Here are some examples of how to address an envelope Australia for military addresses:

Recipient’s serial number, rank, and name.
Unit name.
AFPO number.
AUSTRALIAN DEFENCE FORCES NSW 2890

For an HMA ship’s address, you must mention the HMA ship’s name instead of the unit name and AFPO number. Also, you should write the relevant city, state, and postcode.

Writing a PO Box Address

PO boxes differ from regular addresses because you don’t need to write the street address. Instead, you write the PO box number while addressing the envelope or parcel. However, some people still mention the street number and name above the PO box number.

PO boxes help individuals and businesses receive mail items at a different location than theirs. Thus, they can pick up the packages or envelopes whenever they want and avail of man other services.

It is crucial to understand how to write an address on envelope for PO box addresses. Below, we have mentioned the format to help you:

Recipient’s name
PO box number
City, state abbreviation, and postcode

Also, refer to the examples below for addressing an envelope to a PO box address:

Ginny Smith
PO Box 2099
HOBART TAS 7119

Chris Jackman
5 East Terrace
PO Box 8201
ADELAIDE SA 5000

Formatting International Addresses

Australia Post has a broad range of global mailing options to help you send mail to over 214 countries. However, you must prepare your items according to the prescribed guidelines and learn how to address envelope for international destinations.

Typically, the format for addressing an envelope for overseas mailing is as follows:

Recipient’s name
Organisation’s name (if applicable)
House number and street address
City, state, and postal code.
Country.

Remember to mention the last two lines in capital letters. Also, you can use abbreviations for some destination countries, like the USA, UK, UAE, etc.

Find below the examples of how to write an address on envelope or package to send it via Australia Post’s international mailing services-

The US:

Nicole Hawk
71 5th AVE
OAKLAND CA 90056
USA

The UK:

Millie Smith
12 Cherry Court
SOUTHAMPTON
SO53 5PD
UK

India:

Jay Verma
105 Poonam Plaza
Nehru Road

As you can see, you may need to change the format for addressing an envelope, depending on the destination country. Hence, contact Australia Post or check the relevant country’s postal guidelines.
